The cost of an interlock driveway in Hamilton is set mostly by what goes under the pavers, not by the pavers themselves. Excavation, the depth of the compacted base, drainage, access for the crew and the pattern you choose decide the price; the stone is billed at what it costs at the supplier.

This guide walks through each of those so you can read a Hamilton interlock driveway quote line by line and compare two quotes fairly. There is no price chart here, because a driveway in a flat Stoney Creek subdivision and a driveway on a sloped Dundas lot with an old concrete slab under it are not the same job, even at the same size. The honest number comes from your property.

The base is the driveway

A driveway carries cars turning their wheels while stopped, delivery trucks, snow blowers and the freeze and thaw of a Hamilton winter. Pavers handle all of that only if the base under them does. That is why the biggest line on an interlock driveway quote is the one you will never see once the job is done: excavation and base construction.

The old surface comes out first. Asphalt, concrete, an old gravel base or an earlier set of pavers each come out differently and go to a licensed disposal site, and that removal belongs on the quote as its own line. Then the subgrade is shaped and any soft spots are corrected. Then the granular base goes in and is compacted in layers, deeper for a driveway than for a patio, and graded so water runs away from the house and the garage. Only then does the bedding layer go down and the pavers go on.

When a driveway fails, it is nearly always the base or the drainage that failed, not the stone. A cheaper quote that skips depth or compaction is not a bargain; it is a repair bill with a delay on it.

What moves the price up or down

What is there now

Removing a thick old concrete driveway takes more time and more disposal than lifting a gravel one. Older Hamilton properties sometimes have two or three surfaces layered on top of one another, and the quote should say what happens if more is found once digging starts. The ground under it

Clay holds water and moves with frost. Sand drains but can wash out if it is not compacted properly. Fill that was never compacted settles. The base is designed for the ground it sits on, so a soft or wet subgrade means more base and more work. We check this before we price it, because it is not visible from the street or from photos.

Drainage and slope

A driveway that slopes toward the house, pools near the garage or holds water in a low spot needs that fixed as part of the job. Water that sits under pavers freezes, lifts them and drops them again. Access

If a machine can reach the driveway, excavation and base are fast. If the driveway is hemmed in by a fence, a hedge or a neighbour’s wall, more material moves by hand. The work is the same; the hours are not.

The pavers and the pattern

Driveway pavers are thicker than patio pavers, and the price per stone varies with finish, colour blend and brand. The pattern matters as much as the stone. Herringbone locks together and handles turning tires well, and a single contrasting border frames the driveway without many cuts. Inlays, curves and multiple borders look great and take far more cutting, so they cost more to lay.

The edges and the transitions

Edge restraint keeps the field from spreading. Polymeric sand, swept in and compacted in two applications, locks the joints and slows weeds. Where the driveway meets the garage floor, the City sidewalk and the curb, the transitions need cutting, grading and sometimes a concrete apron. A quote that leaves these out will grow once the job is on site.

How to compare two interlock driveway quotes

Put the two quotes side by side and compare the lines, not the totals. Check that each one includes:

• Removal of the old surface and disposal at a licensed site.
• Excavation to a stated depth and a compacted base, with the depth written down.
• A drainage plan: where the water goes when the job is done.
• Driveway rated pavers, named by brand and thickness, and whether they are billed at cost.
• Edge restraint and polymeric sand.
• The transitions at the garage, the sidewalk and the curb.
• Restoration of the lawn and beds the machine drove over.
• A workmanship warranty, and what happens if something unexpected is found under the old driveway.
