Sod installation in Hamilton, Burlington and nearby

Lumen Landscaping installs new sod lawns across Hamilton, Burlington and the towns around them: the old grass stripped out, the ground graded, real topsoil added where it is needed, premium Kentucky bluegrass sod laid tight as the last step, rolled and watered in, with a written lawn care plan to get it rooted. For a free written quote call (905) 906-0671 or send the form on this page. A lawn can often be quoted from the square footage and a few photos by text or email; we come out when the yard needs a look.

We lay sod on its own and as the finish to bigger projects, after a patio, a wall or a drainage fix, so the yard is done in one go. Once your new lawn is established, the care plan tells you how to keep it, and our lawn care page covers mowing and seasonal upkeep.

Sod is the last thing we do on a yard and the first thing you see, which is why the prep matters more than the rolls. A lawn laid on compacted builder's clay fails by August; a lawn laid on loosened ground and real topsoil, graded to drain, is the one that is still thick in five years.

“I recently had Lumen remove the surface of our weed-infested lawn and replace it with fresh sod on the larger of two areas, and river rock on the smaller area. It was a pleasure dealing with Jeff at Lumen.”

New builds, boulevards and why new sod fails

New builds. Builder’s sod goes down on ground packed hard by every truck that crossed the lot, under a skim of soil, and it browns off within a season. We strip it, loosen the ground, add real topsoil, grade to the plan so the swales still work, and lay fresh sod. Most of our new lawns in Waterdown, Binbrook, Mount Hope and upper Stoney Creek are exactly this job. Read new build lawn dying.

Commercial boulevards and properties. We re-sod boulevard strips, plaza frontages and condo lawns the same way, usually in one visit so the property is back in use quickly.

Why new sod fails. Laid over old grass, laid on compacted clay with no topsoil, laid in a July heat wave and under-watered, or walked on before it rooted. Every one of those is avoidable, and the care plan covers the last two. If your last lawn died, read patchy or dead lawn and clay soil where nothing grows.

    • Instant Lawn Transformation: Unlike seeding, sod gives you a green lawn the day it goes down, and it roots in about two to three weeks.
    • Enhanced Durability: Kentucky bluegrass stands up to foot traffic, kids, pets and commercial use.
    • New Sod Lawn Care Plan: Written aftercare for your new sod: how much to water and when, when to walk on it, and when and how high to make the first mow, so it roots in and stays healthy.

What affects the price of a new lawn

    • The square footage, and whether the old lawn has to come out
    • How much topsoil the ground needs, and how much regrading
    • Roots, stumps or old hardscape found under the surface
    • Access for the skid steer and the sod pallets

The written quote is free and holds for the work it describes.

    FAQs

    Sod installation questions

Yes, one of the best. Hamilton's last frost is around late April and the first around late October, and sod laid from late August into October gets cool nights, warm soil and fall rain, so it roots with far less watering than a July lawn. Spring is just as good. Read sod versus seed for the timing.

Every day for the first two weeks, enough to keep the soil under the rolls damp, then taper off as the roots take hold. Your written care plan gives the amounts and the days for your lawn, and we go through it with you. The full guide is on our new sod care post.

Yes, every time. Sod laid over old grass or weeds never roots into the soil, so we excavate and dispose of the old lawn, loosen the ground, rake out the debris, regrade so water runs off, and add topsoil where it is thin. Then the sod goes down. Read how we prepare a yard for sod.

Usually one of four things: it was laid over old grass, it went on compacted clay with no topsoil, it was laid in a heat wave and under-watered, or it was walked on before it rooted. The first two are prep, which is most of our job; the last two are in the care plan. See why a lawn is patchy or dead.

Not on what the builder left, no. We strip the builder's sod, loosen the compacted ground, bring in real topsoil, grade to the subdivision plan so the swales still carry water, and lay fresh sod on that. That is the most common lawn we do, and it takes. Read new build lawn dying.

Keep off it for the first two to three weeks while the roots knit in, then light foot traffic, and normal use once the lawn resists a tug. Worn paths are the main risk in the first month, so plan a route around the new sod. The care plan gives the dates.

Often we do not need to. A lot of lawns can be quoted from the square footage and a few photos sent by text or email, which is faster for you. When the grade, drainage or access is in question, we come out and walk it with you. Either way the quote is written and free.

About two to three weeks to take hold, with proper watering, and a full season to be at its strongest. Sod starter fertilizer under the rolls and rolling them for soil contact speed it up. Hold off on the first mow until the grass has grown and the rolls cannot be lifted; the care plan says how high to cut.

It is the grass that suits a Hamilton lawn: deep green, dense, tough under feet and paws, and it repairs itself by spreading. It wants sun and regular water, and on a shady or very dry site we tell you what to expect. Sod is billed at what it costs us, with no markup.

Yes. We re-sod boulevard strips, plaza frontages, condo lawns and new-build lots, and we work with builders and property managers as well as homeowners. The prep is the same: old turf out, topsoil in, graded and rolled. Tell us the address and the square footage and we will quote it.

The square footage, whether the old lawn has to come out, how much topsoil the ground needs, how much regrading, anything we find under the surface such as roots or old hardscape, and access for the machine and the pallets. Each is a line on the written quote, which is free. We never print prices because no two yards need the same prep. Read our sod cost guide for what drives it.

Not for routine landscaping. Hamilton's site alteration by-law needs a permit when fill is added above a modest depth, when drainage onto a neighbour changes or when a swale is altered; the regrading under a new lawn stays inside that exemption, and we grade to the lot plan so the swales keep working. We tell you before we quote if your yard needs more than that.
