    Grimsby

Serving Grimsby homeowners from the lake to the escarpment

Grimsby is a town with the lake on one side and the escarpment on the other, and not much room in between. Forty Mile Creek runs through the middle, Beamer Memorial Conservation Area looks down from the top of the cliff, and the town has been growing fast along Casablanca Boulevard while keeping its painted cottages at Grimsby Beach. Nearly 29,000 people lived here at the 2021 census, up almost six percent in five years. The yards follow the geography: compact lots by the lake where every square foot counts, established gardens along Main Street, slope lots under the escarpment that need walls and steps, and new subdivisions in the west end with bare lot lines and builder's sod.

Grimsby is in Niagara Region, so the rules are its own and the conservation authority is the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, not Hamilton's. We build interlock patios, retaining walls, new lawns, fences and gardens across the town, and we know which map to check before we quote. The same crew comes down the QEW for the quote, the build and the final sweep. The quote is free and in writing, the stone and sod are billed at cost, our work carries a 1-year craftsmanship warranty and we are fully insured, in Grimsby as in Hamilton. Call (905) 906-0671 or send the form, and tell us whether you are above the escarpment or down by the lake.

    What we build in Grimsby

Our Grimsby services, lakeshore and escarpment alike, quoted free and in writing. The full build detail is one click away on each.

    • Interlock patios: Compact patios that make the most of a Grimsby Beach lot and bigger ones for the west end, on a deep compacted base.
    • Interlock driveways: Driveways built for cars and winters on a deeper base than a patio, with the approach at the street planned with the Town.
    • Walkways and front entrances: Front walks in interlock, slabs or flagstone for the old town, sloped away from the house and stepped where the grade needs it.
    • Retaining walls: Block and armour stone walls for the lots along Mountain Street and Ridge Road, with drainage behind them and the escarpment map checked first.
    • Concrete: Broom, exposed aggregate or stamped, poured on a proper base with control joints, for the lake lots and the escarpment side alike.
    • Concrete driveways: A plain broom finish concrete driveway with mesh, joints and a proper apron, sloped to clear the house.
    • Concrete steps and porches: Front steps and porches on older Main Street homes replaced, plus shed and hot tub pads.
    • Patio restoration: Settled or weedy interlock re-levelled, washed and re-sanded, the original stones kept.
    • Grading: Yards regraded so water runs toward the street or a swale instead of the foundation, on lots that slope toward the lake.
    • Drainage: French drains, swales and downspout extensions for the low corner that the clay plain never lets dry.
    • Sod and lawns: Builder's sod in the west end stripped, real topsoil added, bluegrass sod laid tight, and patchy old lawns in town redone the same way.
    • Gardens and planting: Beds planned for the lake wind at the Beach and the shade of old trees in town, with every plant billed at cost.
    • Garden bed cleanup, mulch and edging: Cottage beds that got away stripped of fabric and weeds, edged deep and mulched fresh in a visit.
    • Decks and fences: Decks and privacy fences for new subdivision backyards, built to the Town's fence rules.
    • Fences and gates: Privacy fences, horizontal cedar, gates that stay square and failed fence sections rebuilt.
    • Hardscaping: Steps, borders and fire pit areas that make a small lot feel bigger and a slope lot usable.

Building in Grimsby: what to know before you start

The ground between the lake and the cliff. Grimsby sits on the old lake plain below the escarpment, on lake-laid deposits that range from fine sand and silt to heavy clay, with clay the usual story under the escarpment. This is the strip that grew tender fruit and grapes, and north of the escarpment about 280 hectares are still designated specialty crop land under the Greenbelt Plan. Where the ground is clay it holds water and heaves in a freeze, so a patio or driveway needs a deep compacted gravel base and a fall away from the house, and a new lawn needs real topsoil rather than a skim. Where it is sandier the base matters just as much, because sand moves when it is not contained.

Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. Grimsby is NPCA territory. The authority regulates Forty Mile Creek, the other creeks and the lake shoreline under Ontario Regulation 41/24, and Beamer Memorial Conservation Area on the escarpment top is its land. A lot near a creek or the shore can be inside the regulated area, and a wall, a patio near the bank or a change of grade there needs the NPCA’s permission first. Lots on the escarpment itself can also fall inside the Niagara Escarpment Commission’s Area of Development Control, where an NEC permit comes before the Town’s building permit. We check both maps before we quote.

The Town’s own rules. Grimsby is in Niagara Region, so Hamilton’s by-laws do not apply here. Fence heights are set in the Town’s Zoning By-law 14-45, which has its own residential fence height section and keeps fences, hedges and other obstructions to 0.8 metres within 4.5 metres of a street line and inside visibility triangles. The Town also has a site alteration by-law, 2020-44, under which fill and grade changes are permitted through Public Works. We read the current version for your lot before we quote and tell you what applies.

Walls, decks and locates. Under the Ontario Building Code a retaining wall over 1,000 millimetres in exposed height beside public property, a building entrance or private property the public uses is a designated structure that needs a permit and an engineer’s design, in Grimsby as everywhere in Ontario. A deck attached to the house generally needs a building permit from the Town. We request the free Ontario One Call locate before any digging, as the law requires.

The season. Grimsby shares our growing season: plant hardiness zone 6b, the last spring frost around late April and the first fall frost around late October, with the lake taking the edge off both ends. Planting and sod run spring to fall, walls and patios through the summer, and we stop digging when the ground freezes. Accepted quotes take their place in the schedule in order.

    FAQs

    Grimsby landscaping questions

Yes: Grimsby Beach, downtown and Main Street, the lots under the escarpment along Mountain Street and Ridge Road, and the newer streets around Casablanca Boulevard. We are a Hamilton crew a short drive along the QEW. Call (905) 906-0671 and tell us if you are up top or on the lake side.

Yes. Small lots are where a well planned patio earns its keep. We size it to the space, keep the base deep so it stays flat, and plan the materials and haul-away route for a narrow lot before we start. Read about interlock patios.

The same deep compacted base, with more care at the edges. Sand drifts when it is not held in, so a solid edge restraint matters as much as the depth of the gravel. Where the ground is clay instead, the base also has to drain so frost cannot lift it. Read about interlock patios.

Yes. Low, tough shrubs and perennials, mulch to hold moisture, and taller plants set where the house or a fence breaks the wind make a garden that lasts by the water. Every plant is billed at what it costs us. See garden beds and planting.

Builder's sod on a thin layer of soil over ground compacted by construction. The roots never got down, so the lawn burns in July and thins every year. We strip the old turf, bring in real topsoil, grade so water leaves and lay fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod. See sod installation for what a new lawn includes.

Yes. Open joints are the problem, not the weeds. We pressure wash deep between the pavers, then fill the joints with polymeric sand in two applications so they set hard. If the patio has also sunk we lift and re-level it first. Read about patio restoration.

We reply fast, usually within the hour. A lot of Grimsby jobs are quoted from photos by text or email; when the slope or the access needs a look, we set a visit at a time that suits you. The written quote follows quickly, and an accepted quote takes its place in the calendar in order.

No. One written price covers the work, and Grimsby carries no travel line. Grimsby is close to us, and materials are billed at what they cost us with no markup.

Yes. We try to give a heads-up on any delays and let you know when we are coming, with as much notice as possible. If rain moves a Grimsby day, you hear it from us rather than finding an empty driveway in the morning.

Over the course of the job. The first payment is made when the agreement is signed, then payments as each stage is finished, and the last on completion. The amounts are all in the agreement before work begins, with materials billed at cost and no markup.

Niagara's. Grimsby is in Niagara Region, so the Town's own zoning by-law sets fence heights, its site alteration by-law covers fill and grading, and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority regulates the creeks and the shoreline. We check the Town's current rules and the NPCA map for your lot before we quote.

Yes, an entrance permit. The Town requires one to widen a driveway, request a curb cut, extend or add a culvert, or install a second driveway, which needs the Town's approval in principle first, and its Public Works department handles them. We plan the driveway on your lot to match what the permit allows. See concrete driveways.

Probably. The Town's heritage permit guide lists hard landscaping on a property designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, including patios, fences, gates, retaining walls and walkways, as work that may need a heritage permit, while planting does not. A home that is only listed on the register, not designated, does not need one, and Grimsby has over 60 designated properties.

Allow several weeks. The Town reviews a complete residential application within 10 business days, but its own average for residential alterations is about seven weeks, and applications now go in online through Cloudpermit. We plan the build date around it.

Under the Ontario Building Code a wall showing more than a metre of face beside public property, a building entrance or anywhere the public walks is a designated structure, so it needs a permit and an engineer's drawings. On the escarpment the Niagara Escarpment Commission may also have a say, and near Forty Mile Creek the NPCA may. We say so before the quote, not after. See retaining walls.
