Bed cleanup
A bed that got away from you, brought back in one visit
You know the bed. The mulch went down five springs ago and has turned into soil. The landscape fabric has surfaced at the edges and the weeds have rooted straight through it. The lawn has crept in on one side and the hostas have marched out on the other, and somewhere in the middle are three shrubs you actually like. You could spend four weekends on it. Or we can do it in a day.
The job is simple and the order matters. We strip the top layer, fabric, mulch, weeds and anything you do not want, keeping the plants you do want in place. We cut a deep shovel edge so the lawn and the bed read as two clean shapes. New premium landscape fabric goes down, cut and tucked around every plant and edge, and fresh mulch or river rock goes over it. Everything that came out leaves with us. Our gardening page covers planting and ongoing care, with designs available on request; this page is the reset.
One customer had a small lawn turned into wood chips over weed barrier, through a gate she did not think a machine would fit, and we were done in a day. Mulch and rock are billed at what they cost us. Call (905) 906-0671 or send the form for a free written quote.
Our Work
Beds before and after
What a bed cleanup includes
These are the lines your quote will carry, in the words we use on it.
- Strip the top layer: Excavate and dispose of the old landscape fabric, mulch, weeds and any unwanted plants, keeping the wanted plants in place.
- A deep shovel edge: A deep, crisp shovel edge along the bed instead of aluminum edging, so the grass and the garden read as two clean shapes. On a long straight run a machine edge gives the same clean line between lawn and garden.
- New premium landscape fabric: Across the whole bed, carefully cut and tucked around existing plants and edges for a cleaner finish and better weed suppression.
- Fresh mulch: Any colour or type you prefer, delivered and spread to an even depth across the beds, with the edges tidied on completion.
- Or river rock: The old rock, weeds and roots out, new fabric meticulously across the whole area, and new river rock or the decorative gravel you prefer. Clean reusable rock is set aside and reused along the bottom, topped with fresh.
- Weeds pulled where they hide: By the meter, in the rocks beside the air conditioner, along the fence. Pulled by the root where possible and hauled away.
- Everything hauled away: The bed is left ready for planting, and the lawn and walk are swept.
- Mulch and rock at cost: Billed at what they cost us, with no markup.

What our customers say
“The owner was professional, communicated well, and his crew especially Ari did a great job. I really enjoyed the experience of choosing each plant with the owner's help and now our yard feels like a true oasis.”
“Great experience with Lumen Landscaping. They completely transformed my front yard with a great mix of trees, hydrangeas, and flowers. They brought the yard back to life and did a really clean, professional job.”
“Great job having small grass lawn replaced with wood chips. Didnt know we could get a machine through the small gate - the top layer, weed barrier cloth and thick layer of chips. They cleaned up after and were done in a day.”
Step by step
How the day goes
Most cleanups are a single day. Here is how it runs.
- Walk the beds with you: We mark what stays and what goes, plant by plant. Nothing you love leaves the bed.
- Strip: The old fabric, mulch, weeds and unwanted plants come out by hand around what stays and by machine where there is room, through a gate if that is the only way in.
- Edge: A deep shovel edge around the whole bed, or a machine edge on a long run.
- Fabric: New premium landscape fabric across the bed, cut and tucked around every plant and edge.
- Mulch or rock: Delivered, spread to an even depth, the edges tidied.
- Haul and sweep: Everything that came out leaves with us. We walk the beds with you before we go and tell you how to water anything new.

Planning
What is not included, what changes the price, and mulch or rock
Not included. New plants: see our gardening page; plants are billed at cost and installed by pot size, and we can add them to the same visit. Taking out a large bush with its stump is its own line: cut down, dig out the stump and roots, haul away, and leave the ground level. Trimming a hedge on all sides, or taking the low branches off a tree, are their own lines too. New soil to raise a bed is priced per yard installed.
Mulch or river rock? Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down, keeps roots cool and looks right under shrubs and perennials, and it needs topping up every few years. River rock is permanent, never needs replacing and suits a side yard, a border along the house or a bed with no plants in it, but it holds heat, is heavy to change your mind about, and collects leaves that have to be blown out. Both go over new fabric. Read weeds growing through river rock before you choose rock for a planted bed.
What affects the price.
- The bed area and how thick the old layer is
- How many plants stay and have to be worked around
- The yards of mulch or rock
- The haul route: a back bed behind a narrow gate is done with smaller tools
- Shrubs, stumps or hedges that come out with it
The season. Spring and fall are best, and any week the ground is not frozen works. A spring cleanup before the perennials are up is the easiest on the plants.

FAQs
Garden bed cleanup questions
Yes. We walk the beds with you first and mark what stays. The old fabric, mulch and weeds are stripped by hand around those plants, and the new fabric is cut and tucked around each one. If a plant you love is in the wrong place we can move it the same day.
Mulch for a planted bed: it feeds the soil, keeps roots cool and is easy to add plants to. Rock for a side yard, a strip along the house or a bed with little in it: it is permanent and never needs topping up, but it holds heat and is hard to change later. Both go over fresh fabric. Read weeds in river rock.
It stops the ones that come up from below and makes the ones that blow in easy to pull, because they root in the mulch, not the soil. Old fabric fails when it surfaces and tears; we strip it and lay new premium fabric cut tight around every plant, which is the part that makes the difference.
Deep enough to smother weeds and hold moisture without burying the crowns of your plants. We spread it to an even depth and keep it pulled back from stems and trunks. Your quote states the yards of mulch for your beds, billed at cost.
A light top-up each spring keeps it at depth, because mulch breaks down into the soil as it works. Left for a few years it thins out, the weeds find the soil again and the bed needs a full reset like the one on this page; our mulching guide covers when and how much.
Yes, and it is our usual edge. We cut a deep, crisp shovel edge so the lawn and the bed read as two clean shapes, with no strip to heave out of the ground over the winters. On a long straight run a machine edge gives the same clean line, and either one is quick to re-cut when the grass creeps back.
Yes, as its own line on the quote. A large bush is cut down, the stump and roots dug out and the ground left level, ready for planting or mulch. Trees are different: taking one down is an arborist's job, and we say so.
Yes. New plants can go in the same day, matched to the sun and soil the bed actually has, billed at what they cost us and installed by pot size. Tell us what you like or let us bring options; see gardens and planting.
Usually. We have taken a machine through a gate a customer was sure it would not fit, and where it will not fit we work with wheelbarrows and hand tools. The quote allows for it, and the job still takes about a day on most homes.
Most homes are a single day, front and back. A large property, or one with shrubs and stumps coming out, can run into a second day. Your written quote gives the timeline.
Spring and fall are best, and any week the ground is not frozen works. A spring cleanup before the perennials come up is the easiest on the plants, and a fall cleanup leaves the beds edged and mulched for winter.
No. There is no minimum, and a single bed gets the same care and the same written quote as a whole yard. A lot of the time we can quote a bed cleanup from a few photos sent by text or email, and we come out when the job needs a look.
