Interlock Repair
Interlock repair in Hamilton, Burlington and nearby
Most interlock does not need to be replaced. When a few stones sink, a driveway dips where the car parks, or a walkway heaves after winter, the problem is almost always the base underneath, not the pavers. We lift the area that moved, find out why, rebuild and compact the base, reset the same stones flush with the rest and lock the joints with new polymeric sand. You keep the patio you paid for, and it looks right again.
Looking for cleaning, re-sanding and sealing instead? That is patio restoration. If the whole surface has failed, we will tell you honestly that a new interlock patio or driveway is the better spend.
What an interlock repair includes
Every repair quote is written and lists exactly which of these your interlock needs, so nothing is added that the job does not call for.
- Re-levelling sunken pavers: The low stones lifted, the base under them rebuilt and compacted in layers, and the pavers reset flush. Read why interlock patios sink.
- Driveway dips and ruts: Tire tracks and soft spots dug out to firm ground and rebuilt with a deeper base for the weight of a car. See uneven interlock driveways.
- Heaved walkways and trip edges: Stones pushed up by frost or roots taken up, the cause dealt with, and the walk reset so nobody catches a toe.
- Loose or rocking steps: Interlock steps and risers taken apart, rebuilt on a firm base and glued where needed. More on rebuilding interlock front steps.
- Edge restraint repair: Spreading borders pulled back into line and held with new edge restraint, so the field stops creeping out.
- Pavers sloping toward the house: The slope corrected so water runs away from your foundation. Read about pavers sloping toward the house.
- Broken and cracked stones: Damaged pavers cut out and replaced with the closest match we can source.
- New polymeric sand: Old joint sand and weeds cleaned out and the joints refilled with polymeric sand that sets firm and helps keep weeds and ants out. See weeds and ants in pavers.

- Over 40 five-star Google reviews: Homeowners across Hamilton rate our restoration work five stars, every review on Google.
Planning
Why interlock sinks and heaves in Hamilton
Clay soil holds water. Much of Hamilton, from the West and East Mountain to Binbrook and Stoney Creek, sits on clay. When water gets under a patio and cannot drain away, the base softens and the stones above it settle.
Freeze and thaw. Water trapped in the base freezes, expands and lifts the pavers, then drops them unevenly in spring. A few winters of that and a flat patio develops humps and dips.
Thin or loose base. Many patios and driveways were built on a few inches of gravel that was never compacted properly. They look fine for a few years, then start to move.
Downspouts and grading. A downspout that empties onto the interlock, or a patio sloped back toward the house, washes out the base in one spot. Read how downspouts and eavestroughs sink driveways.
How we fix it so it stays fixed. We dig past the soft material, add and compact new base in layers, set the bedding sand to the right slope, reset the stones, compact the surface and lock the joints. If water is the cause, we deal with the water too, with regrading or yard drainage, so the repair is not back next spring.
Repair or replace? If the sinking is in a few areas and the stones are in decent shape, repair is the better value. If most of the surface has moved, the stones are crumbling, or the base was never built for the load, we will say so and quote a rebuild instead.

FAQs
Interlock repair questions
Yes. We lift only the area that moved, rebuild the base under it and reset the same stones, so the repair blends in with the rest of the patio or driveway.
We reuse your existing stones wherever they are sound, so colour and texture match. If a few are broken, we source the closest match available and tell you before we start.
Usually the base was too thin for the weight of a car, or water softened it. We dig out the soft area, rebuild a deeper compacted base and reset the pavers.

If the problems are in a few areas and the stones are in good shape, repair is the better value. If most of the surface has moved or the stones are failing, we will tell you honestly that a rebuild makes more sense.
