Stamped concrete
Stamped concrete patios, driveways and walkways in Hamilton
Lumen Landscaping sells and manages stamped concrete patios, driveways, walkways and front steps across Hamilton, Burlington and the towns around them: the dig, the base, the pour, the stamping, the colour, the sealer and the clean-up. For a free written quote call (905) 906-0671 or send the form on this page. Many stamped jobs can be quoted from a few measurements and photos by text or email; when the site needs a look, we come out.
Stamped concrete gives you the look of flagstone, slate, cobblestone or brick in one solid slab: no joints for weeds, nothing to shift, easy to sweep and hose. It suits a backyard patio that should feel like stone, a driveway with a border that frames the house, and a front walk that matches the porch.
A slab is one piece, so a sunken corner cannot be lifted and relaid the way a paver can, which is why we spend more time on the base and the slope than on the pattern. When your soil points to pavers instead, we say so: we build interlock patios, driveways and walkways too.
What a stamped concrete job includes
Every quote spells out these steps, so you can compare it line by line.
- Excavation and disposal: The old surface comes out with enough soil to make room for a real base, and it is all hauled away.
- A compacted gravel base: Crushed gravel laid in layers and compacted each time, deeper under a driveway than a walkway, so the slab sits on ground that will not settle.
- Forms set to the slope: Finished concrete falls away from the house and clears the basement vents, which is where most heaved slabs went wrong.
- Reinforcement and a thick pour: Wire mesh through the slab and concrete at least four inches thick, more under a driveway or a pad.
- Pattern and colour: A base colour, an accent colour for depth, and the stamp pressed in while the concrete is still workable.
- Control joints and clean-up: Joints cut where a slab wants to crack anyway, forms stripped, the surface washed, soil placed back along the edges.
- Sealer: Applied once the slab has cured, to deepen the colour and protect it from salt, oil and stains. Re-sealing later keeps it that way.

Choices
Patterns, colours and borders that suit the house
Flagstone and slate stamps read as natural stone, cobblestone and brick suit older homes, and a wood plank stamp works on a patio off a deck. Colour is one base colour and one accent colour; the accent is what gives a stamped slab its depth so it does not look painted.
Borders change everything. A plain band around a stamped field, or a stamped border around a broom finish driveway, costs less than stamping the whole thing and often looks better. We can run an interlock border of real pavers around a stamped patio, and we match colours to your brick or stone veneer. Bring a photo of the house to the quote and we bring the samples.
At the front, the same pattern can run from the walk up the steps and the porch, and a broom finish concrete driveway with a stamped border suits a long drive.

Planning
Stamped or pavers, cure times and winter care
Stamped concrete or interlock pavers. Both last for decades on a proper base. Stamped is one seamless surface with no joints for weeds or ants. Interlock can be lifted and relaid a section at a time, and on heavy clay that heaves every winter it forgives movement a little better.
Cure times. Light foot traffic after about a day or two, cars after about a week, depending on the weather. Stamping happens the day of the pour; sealing waits until the slab has cured and dried.
Hamilton winters. Freeze and thaw is what wears concrete here. A sealed surface, a slope that never lets water sit, and no de-icing salt the first winter make the biggest difference. Use sand for grip and a plastic shovel.
What affects the price of stamped concrete
- The size of the area and how thick the slab needs to be
- How much old surface and soil has to come out
- The pattern, the number of colours, borders and steps
- Access for equipment and the concrete truck
- Sealing, and a porch or walkway tied in at the same time
The written quote is free and holds for the work it describes.

FAQs
Stamped concrete questions
Broom finish is the plain, grippy surface on most driveways and the lowest cost. Exposed aggregate shows the stone in the mix, hides dirt and is very slip resistant, so it suits pool decks. Stamped gives you a stone, slate or brick look with colour; around a pool we use a textured stamp and a grit in the sealer. Many jobs mix them.
The common stamps are flagstone, slate, cobblestone, brick and wood plank, each in a few sizes. Colour is a base colour plus an accent colour worked into the texture, which makes the pattern read as stone instead of a flat tint. We bring the charts and samples to the quote so you can hold them against the house.
Usually, yes. We pick the base colour to sit with your brick or siding and the accent to pick up the mortar or the trim, and we can run a border of real pavers around the stamped field to tie it to existing interlock. Send a photo of the house by text or email and we bring the closest samples.
Cracks come from the ground, not the pattern. We dig out the soft soil, compact crushed gravel in layers, set the forms to a slope that drains, run wire mesh through the slab and make it at least four inches thick. Control joints are cut where a slab wants to crack anyway, so any movement happens in a straight line.
That flaking is spalling. Water gets into the top of the slab, freezes and pops the surface off, and de-icing salt makes it worse; a slab finished while water sat on top, or never sealed, flakes first. Light spalling can be ground and resurfaced. A slab flaking through and sinking is better replaced on a proper base.
Light foot traffic after about a day or two, patio furniture after a few days and cars after about a week, depending on the weather. The sealer goes on once the slab has cured and dried, and we give you the dates for each step before the pour so you can plan around them.
Yes. Sealing keeps the colour rich and stops the surface soaking up salt, oil and stains, and it is the one bit of upkeep stamped concrete asks for. The first coat goes on after the cure. After that, re-sealing every few years, when water stops beading on the surface, keeps it looking new.
Sand or a traction grit for the first winter, and a plastic shovel rather than a steel scraper. Rock salt and most de-icers draw water into the surface, and on a slab that is still curing that is how flaking starts. From the second winter a sealed slab handles an occasional light de-icer, but sand is still the kindest choice.
Pick stamped if you want a seamless surface with no joints to weed and a stone look for less than real stone. Pick interlock if you want to lift and relay a section later, if your soil heaves badly, or if you want a texture only a paver gives. We build both, so you get a straight answer.
The size and thickness of the slab, how much digging and haul-away the old surface needs, the pattern and how many colours go into it, borders and steps, access for the concrete truck, and whether we seal it and tie in a walkway or porch at the same time. Each is a line on your written quote, and the quote is free.
Yes. We set the forms so the finished slab falls away from the foundation and sits below any basement window, vent or weep hole, and we check it with a level before the truck arrives. Water running toward the house is the most common fault we are asked to fix on someone else's driveway.
Often, yes. A porch that is sound underneath but worn, flaking or stained on top can be ground, resurfaced and parged, with a stamped or broom finish on the new surface. Our concrete porch and step repair page explains it, and when a porch is too far gone to save.
A backyard patio or a walkway on your own lot does not need a building permit. A new driveway, or widening one, needs the City of Hamilton's access approval where it crosses the boulevard, with limits on how wide the approach can be. We check that when we quote and handle it as part of the job, and a free Ontario One Call locate comes before any digging.
