    Cambridge

Serving Cambridge homeowners in Galt, Preston and Hespeler

Cambridge is three old towns that became one city on the first of January 1973: Galt on the Grand River, Preston where the Speed meets the Grand, and Hespeler up the Speed. Each kept its character. Galt has century stone homes on narrow downtown lots and bigger lots up the hill, Preston has established neighbourhoods near the rivers, Hespeler has the old mill village with newer subdivisions around it, and east Galt and the growth areas are new homes with new yards. Running through all of it is the Grand River floodplain, where the Grand River Conservation Authority has a say before anything is built, and the dams and dikes that protect the older parts of Galt are a reminder of why.

Concrete driveways are what Cambridge asks us for most, with interlock patios, retaining walls, new lawns and gardens behind them. We are a Hamilton crew and Cambridge is a regular run up Highway 8. You deal with the same people from the first call to the final sweep. You get a written, free quote that holds, materials at what they cost us, a 1-year craftsmanship warranty, and a fully insured crew on the Grand River side of the job. Call (905) 906-0671 or send the form with the address; Galt, Preston and Hespeler each get their own answer.

    What we build in Cambridge

    • Interlock patios: Backyard patios for Hespeler subdivisions and tight downtown Galt lots alike, on a deep compacted base that stays flat through the freeze.
    • Interlock driveways: A deeper compacted base, pavers rated for vehicles and a proper apron at the Cambridge curb.
    • Walkways and front entrances: Front walks in interlock, slabs or flagstone that suit a stone Galt home, sloped away from the house.
    • Retaining walls: Walls for the lots that climb the hill above downtown Galt and the river valleys, with drainage behind them and the GRCA map checked first.
    • Concrete: Walkways, steps and patios for the older Galt and Preston homes, poured thick with control joints and a base that drains.
    • Concrete driveways: The Cambridge job we do most: a plain broom finish driveway on a compacted base, with wire mesh, control joints and a proper apron.
    • Concrete steps and porches: Front steps and porches on older Preston and Galt homes replaced, plus shed and hot tub pads.
    • Patio restoration: Interlock that has settled or grown weeds, lifted, re-levelled and re-sanded with the same stones.
    • Grading: Yards regraded so water leaves the lot, within the city's site alteration by-law.
    • Drainage: French drains, swales and downspout extensions for the low corner that stays wet.
    • Sod and lawns: Builder's sod in the growth areas stripped, real topsoil added, bluegrass sod laid tight.
    • Gardens and planting: Beds planned for the old trees of Galt and Preston, with every plant billed at cost.
    • Garden bed cleanup, mulch and edging: Tired beds cleared of fabric and weeds, keepers left in, a crisp edge cut and mulch spread.
    • Decks and fences: Decks and privacy fences for new backyards, built to Cambridge's fence by-law.
    • Fences and gates: Privacy fences to 2.1 metres behind the house, lower at the front, gates that stay square and failed sections of an older fence rebuilt.
    • Hardscaping: Steps, borders, fire pit areas and stone edges that make a river town yard feel finished.

Building in Cambridge: what to know before you start

The ground. Cambridge sits where the Galt moraine meets the Grand, and the ground changes fast. The moraine is glacial till with beds of gravel in it, which drains well and makes a good base once it is compacted; nearer the rivers the ground is lighter and the water table is closer; and dolostone bedrock shows in the Grand’s banks near Blair Road. A concrete driveway here still wants a compacted aggregate base, wire mesh, control joints and a slab poured thick, whatever is underneath, and a patio or wall wants the same deep base and drainage it would anywhere.

The floodplain. The Grand River Conservation Authority regulates the Grand and Speed floodplains under Ontario Regulation 41/24, and the dams and dikes that protect the older parts of Galt are its work. Lots along the Grand in Galt and the Speed in Hespeler can sit inside the regulated area, where a wall, a patio near the bank or a grade change waits on the GRCA’s permission. Its Map Your Property tool shows the line, and we check it before we quote on a river lot.

The city’s own rules. Cambridge is in Waterloo Region, so Hamilton’s by-laws do not apply. Fence By-law 92-05 allows a fence up to 2.1 metres between the front face of the house and the rear property line and along the rear line, 0.9 metres between the front of the house and the front lot line, and no more than 0.75 metres near the corners of a corner lot so sightlines stay clear. A fence does not need a permit unless it encloses a pool. Site Alteration By-law 23-103 regulates placing or dumping fill, removing topsoil and changing the grade, so a regrade or a terrace is checked against it before we start. We read the current rules for your lot when we quote.

Walls, decks and locates. Under the Ontario Building Code a retaining wall over 1,000 millimetres in exposed height beside public property, a building entrance or private property the public uses is a designated structure that needs a permit and an engineer’s design, in Cambridge as everywhere in Ontario. A deck attached to the house generally needs a building permit from the city. Before a shovel goes in, Ontario One Call marks the services for free; we request it.

The season. Cambridge is a little inland and a little higher than Hamilton, so spring comes a touch later and the first frost a touch earlier, but the shape of the season is the same: sod and planting from spring to fall, concrete, interlock and fences through the summer, and digging stops when the ground freezes. Concrete wants a run of days above freezing to cure, so we watch the forecast at both ends of the season. The calendar fills in the order quotes come back signed.

    FAQs

    Cambridge landscaping questions

Yes: Galt, Preston, Hespeler, east Galt and the growth areas. We are a Hamilton crew, and Cambridge is a regular run up Highway 8, so we book the work in blocks and the crew is there start to finish. Call (905) 906-0671 and say which of the three towns you are in.

Concrete driveways. A plain broom finish slab on a compacted aggregate base with wire mesh, control joints cut where the slab wants to crack, and a proper apron at the street. Our guide to concrete driveway installation in Cambridge walks through it, and the concrete driveways page has the full scope.

It depends on the forecast more than the calendar. Concrete needs a run of days above freezing to cure properly, so late-fall work waits for a mild stretch, and we would rather move a date than let a new slab freeze. Most of the season is fine; it is the two ends of it that need watching. See concrete driveways.

Usually a thin slab on an uncompacted base with no joints. The base settled, water got under it, the freeze lifted it and the slab broke where it had no joint to crack along. We replace it on a compacted base with mesh and joints. Read about cracked, sunken concrete walkways.

Usually. Natural stone walls, steps and flagstone paths suit downtown Galt, and we source stone to sit beside what the house already has. Stone is billed at cost with no markup, so the choice is about the look. See retaining walls and walkways.

No. The quote is one written price for the work; there is no travel charge for Cambridge. Distance affects scheduling, so we group Cambridge work and tell you the dates when we quote.

We tell you directly. We try to give a heads-up on any delays and let you know when we are coming, with as much notice as possible. Because we group Cambridge work, a rain day can shift a block of dates, and you hear about it from us first.

A 1-year craftsmanship warranty, the same in Galt, Preston and Hespeler. It covers our workmanship for a year after the job is done, we are fully insured on every site, and the warranty is stated on your written quote.

Not in Cambridge. The City says water from eavestroughs, downspouts or sump pump lines cannot be aimed at a neighbouring property or straight onto an entrance, walkway, stair or sidewalk, and yards have to be graded so storm water does not pond. We extend the downspout to a spot that drains, or add a drain where the yard cannot take it. Read about yard drainage.

Up to 2.1 metres from the front face of the house back to the rear property line, 0.9 metres in front of the house, and no more than 0.75 metres near the corners of a corner lot. No permit unless the fence encloses a pool. That is Cambridge's Fence By-law 92-05, and we build to it. See fences and gates.

Yes, with a Region of Waterloo permit. From May 31 to September 30 the Water Conservation By-law limits lawn watering to one day a week, so new sod needs the Region's temporary permit, which allows watering any time on the first day, then daily within the set morning and evening hours, then every other day up to day fourteen. One permit is allowed per property each year, and from October 1 to May 30 none is needed.

Usually, and if the lot sits inside the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated floodplain its permission comes first. The GRCA's Map Your Property tool shows the line, and we check it before we quote so the approval time is in the schedule and the plan suits what will be approved.

For a tree 20 centimetres or more across, yes: Cambridge requires a Private Tree Removal Permit to remove, cut down or otherwise injure a tree that size on private property. We plan patios and driveways around the roots of the trees you keep, and taking a tree down is an arborist's job.

Yes. Cambridge needs an Access Permit for any new driveway access or change to an existing one, with a drawing of the existing and proposed driveway, the curb cut and the materials; the maximum width is 7 metres and at least 45 percent landscaped space has to remain. If a City tree must come out to make room, the City does that work and the owner pays for it.

A retaining wall taller than 1 metre can need one, depending on where it sits, while landscaping and fences, other than pool enclosures, do not. A detached shed of 15 square metres or less, one storey, used only for storage and with no plumbing needs no building permit, though it still has to meet zoning. See retaining walls.

Possibly. Site Alteration By-law 23-103 regulates placing fill, removing topsoil and changing the grade. A light regrade that does not change where water goes is usually fine; a terrace or a lot of fill is checked against the by-law before we start. We tell you at the quote. Read about grading.
