    Interlock patios in Burlington

Interlock patios and driveways in Burlington: what changes here

Burlington is next door to us and a different rulebook. The patio itself is built the way we build every patio: the old surface dug out, a 4 inch bedding base compacted and graded for drainage, the pavers you chose, edge retention along the grass, and polymeric sand compacted in twice. What changes in Burlington is what happens before the dig: the City's site alteration checklist names patios, Conservation Halton regulates the creek lots, and a private tree by-law reaches most of the city.

We install any brand you like: Unilock, Techo-Bloc, Best Way Stone or Triple H, most of it from Hamilton Builders Supply, billed at what it costs us.

The build is on our interlock patios, driveways and walkways page and the city is on our Burlington page. Pavers come at what they cost us with the builder supply discount passed to you, every job carries a 1-year craftsmanship warranty, and we are fully insured. What a good interlock patio quote in Burlington includes

The lines about the City are the ones most Burlington patio quotes leave out.

    • Excavation and a compacted base: The old patio and soil dug out and hauled away, then a 4 inch high performance bedding base, graded for drainage and compacted so it stops settling.
    • The grade, kept: A note that the patio sits at the existing grade and keeps the drainage pattern, or that the City's site alteration screening has been done. The checklist names patios and asks about grade changes near a lot line.
    • The pavers, named: Brand, colour, size and pattern, with a border where it suits. Ours are billed at cost.
    • Edge restraint and polymeric sand: Edge retention along every border that meets grass, and premium polymeric sand compacted in and then applied a second time to strengthen the joints.
    • Trees: Whether any tree 20 cm or more across is within reach of the dig, because the private tree by-law protects it, roots included.
    • Creeks and ravines: If the lot backs onto a creek or a ravine, whether Conservation Halton's regulated area reaches the patio, and who is checking.
    • A clean site and a warranty: Packaging and spoil removed, and a written warranty on the workmanship. Ours is the 1-year craftsmanship warranty, and we are fully insured.

    By neighbourhood

    Interlock patios by Burlington neighbourhood

Burlington runs from the lake to the escarpment, and the patio job changes along the way.

    • Aldershot: Older lots between the escarpment and the bay, with Grindstone Creek running through. A backyard near the creek or its ravines can be in Conservation Halton's regulated area.
    • Tyandaga and Brant Hills: Homes on the escarpment slopes around the Tyandaga golf course and the winding streets off Brant Street, where a patio often needs a low wall or a step to take up the grade.
    • Roseland and Shoreacres: Lakeside streets first laid out in the 1920s, with stately homes and big trees. The tree by-law shapes where we can dig, and the pavers are chosen to suit an older house.
    • Millcroft and The Orchard: Family neighbourhoods north of the QEW around the Millcroft golf course and the trails into Bronte Creek Provincial Park, with Conservation Halton land along the creek.
    • Alton Village: The newest part of the city, north of Dundas Street between Walkers Line and Appleby Line: small backyards on compacted builder's grade, where the approved grading has to stay.
    • Headon Forest and Palmer: Streets built from the 1980s on, between Upper Middle Road and the QEW, where the original patio is often sunken or weedy and we quote a re-level and a rebuild.

    Local rules

Burlington rules that affect a patio

Site alteration. Burlington’s Site Alteration By-law 64-2014 regulates placing or removing fill and changing the grade or the drainage of a lot. The City’s list of projects that can need a permit includes patio construction and yard landscaping, and its screening checklist decides: a yes to one or more questions, among them a grade change within 0.5 m of a lot line or a retaining wall, means an application. A patio at the existing grade is the usual case, and we go through the checklist with you first.

Creeks. Conservation Halton regulates Grindstone Creek, Bronte Creek, Sixteen Mile Creek and the smaller creeks between them. A lot that backs onto a creek or a ravine can need its permission before the City’s, and we check for your address.

Trees. Inside Burlington’s urban boundary a permit is needed to injure or remove a tree 20 cm or more in diameter, measured at 1.37 m from the ground, and work that damages roots counts. A patio under a mature maple is planned around it.

Locates. Anyone digging in Ontario must have the buried lines marked by Ontario One Call first. There is no charge, we book it, and it takes about five business days.

Walls. Under the Ontario Building Code a retaining or seating wall over 1 m in exposed height beside a walkway, an entrance or public property needs a permit and an engineer’s design.

    FAQs

    Burlington interlock patio questions

Often, with Conservation Halton's say-so. A patio inside its regulated area, along Grindstone, Bronte, Sixteen Mile and the smaller creeks, needs its permission first. We check the map for your address before the quote.

Burlington's private tree by-law protects trees 20 cm or more across inside the urban boundary, and damaging the roots counts as injuring the tree. We lay the patio out to keep the dig away from the root zone.

The build is the same: excavation, a 4 inch compacted bedding base, the pavers you chose, edge restraint and polymeric sand twice. An interlock driveway in Burlington gets the same steps on a deeper base laid in lifts, with thicker pavers rated for cars. The difference is the paperwork: the site alteration screening, Conservation Halton and the tree by-law. Compare the Hamilton patio page.

Often, yes. If the pavers are sound we lift the low spots, rebuild the base and relay the same pavers. When the pavers are cracked or the base was never built, a rebuild is the honest answer. More on sinking interlock patios.

We reply fast, usually within the hour, quote from photos or set a visit when the patio needs one, and the written quote follows quickly. Locates take about five business days, and start dates are booked in the order quotes are accepted, so call (905) 906-0671 early.

Not usually, but the City's screening checklist decides. A patio at the existing grade that leaves the drainage alone generally answers no to every question; raising the grade near a lot line or adding a retaining wall can answer yes. We go through it with you first.
