Oakville
Serving Oakville homeowners, with the paperwork in the right order
Ravine and creek lots are Oakville's signature, and they come with the strictest paperwork in our area. A permit before the grade changes. A permit before a tree 15 centimetres across comes out, hedges included. Conservation Halton at the valley edge along Sixteen Mile Creek, Bronte Creek and Joshua's Creek. None of it is a reason not to build; it is a reason to do things in the right order, and we know the order. Old Oakville and Eastlake bring mature trees and stone to match. Glen Abbey and River Oaks bring the ravine edge. Bronte brings the creek and the harbour, and West Oak Trails, Westmount and Joshua Creek bring newer family lots that are still waiting for their first patio and a proper fence.
We build interlock patios and driveways, retaining walls, concrete, new lawns, fences and gardens across Oakville, and we fold the approvals into the quote rather than discovering them halfway through. One Hamilton crew handles an Oakville job start to finish, no hand-offs. In Oakville as everywhere, the quote is free and written, materials come at cost, the work carries a 1-year craftsmanship warranty and the crew is fully insured. Call (905) 906-0671 or send the form; an Oakville quote starts with the permit questions answered.
What we build in Oakville
What we build in Oakville, with a free written quote and the permit question answered first. Open any one to see how we build it. Our Oakville guides on planning a landscape, outdoor living upgrades and concrete driveways and walkways go deeper on three of them.
- Interlock patios: Patios and pool surrounds that fit around mature trees in Old Oakville and Eastlake, on a deep compacted base, with the roots left alone.
- Interlock driveways: Built for cars on a deep base, with Oakville's driveway width rules checked before we quote.
- Walkways and front entrances: Front walks in interlock, slabs or flagstone that suit a stone and brick streetscape, sloped away from the house.
- Retaining walls: Walls that hold a terrace on a ravine lot, with drainage behind them and the site alteration and Conservation Halton approvals handled first.
- Concrete: Broom, stamped or exposed aggregate for patios, walkways and pool decks, poured thick with the joints cut to control cracking.
- Concrete driveways: A plain broom finish driveway with wire mesh and a proper apron, the way our Oakville concrete guide describes it.
- Concrete steps and porches: Front steps and porches on older Oakville homes replaced, plus shed and hot tub pads.
- Patio restoration: Older Oakville interlock that has settled or opened up, re-levelled, washed and re-sanded rather than replaced.
- Grading: Regrading done under a Development Engineering Permit where the by-law asks for one, so water leaves the lot without crossing a lot line it should not.
- Drainage: French drains, swales and downspout extensions for the clay till under most Oakville yards.
- Sod and lawns: Old or builder's turf stripped, real topsoil added, bluegrass sod laid tight.
- Gardens and planting: Beds planned for the shade of protected trees, with the by-law respected and every plant billed at cost.
- Garden bed cleanup, mulch and edging: Established beds stripped of old fabric and weeds, the plants you want kept, a deep edge cut and fresh mulch spread.
- Decks and fences: Decks and privacy fences for the newer streets, built to Oakville's fence heights.
- Fences and gates: Privacy fences to two metres at the back, open lattice above a metre at the front, gates that stay square.
- Hardscaping: Steps, borders, fire pit areas and outdoor rooms, the kind of work our Oakville outdoor living guide covers.

Local knowledge
Building in Oakville: what to know before you start
The ground. Most of Oakville sits on the Halton till plain: clayey silt till over the red shale of the Queenston Formation, which is often at a shallow to moderate depth. The Trafalgar Moraine runs through the north of town as a clay-rich ridge, and Sixteen Mile Creek has cut right through it into the bedrock. Clay till holds water and heaves in a freeze, so a patio or driveway needs a deep compacted gravel base and a fall away from the house, a wall needs clear gravel and a drain behind it, and a yard that stays wet needs grading and a drain because the ground will not take the water on its own.
Site alteration. Oakville’s Site Alteration By-law 2023-047, in force since May 2023, requires a Development Engineering Permit before fill is placed or removed or the grade is changed. That reaches a lot of ordinary landscaping: a terrace cut into a slope, a regrade along a lot line, a wall that holds back fill. We tell you at the quote whether your project needs the permit and build the time into the schedule.
Trees. Private Tree Protection By-law 2017-038 requires a permit to remove any tree 15 centimetres or more in diameter at chest height, and hedges with 15 centimetre stems count. In Old Oakville and Eastlake that covers most of the trees on the lot, so patios and walkways are routed around roots rather than through them and beds under big trees are planned for shade and dry soil. Ask before a tree comes out; we plan around the ones that stay.
Conservation Halton. Sixteen Mile Creek, Bronte Creek, Joshua’s Creek and the small creeks between them are regulated by Conservation Halton. A lot at the valley edge needs its permit for grading, pools and landscaping near the slope, before the Town’s permits. On a ravine lot we check the map first and quote around what it says.
Fences, walls and locates. Oakville’s Fences and Privacy Screens By-law 2002-034 allows rear and side yard fences up to two metres of solid construction; a front yard fence can reach 1.5 metres as long as anything above one metre is open lattice, and nothing over 0.91 metres sits in a visibility triangle. Any retaining wall over a metre of exposed face beside public property, a building entrance or private property the public uses is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code, with a permit and an engineered design. A free Ontario One Call locate comes first, by law, and we take care of the request.
The season. Oakville shares our growing season: plant hardiness zone 6b, the last spring frost around late April and the first fall frost around late October. Lawns and gardens spring to fall, hardscape through the summer, and no digging once the ground freezes. Approvals take time, so an early call matters more here than anywhere. The schedule fills in the order quotes are accepted, with the permit lead time built in.

FAQs
Oakville landscaping questions
Yes: Old Oakville, Eastlake, Glen Abbey, River Oaks, Bronte, West Oak Trails, Westmount, Joshua Creek and the streets between. We are a Hamilton crew, and Oakville is a regular run along the QEW. Call (905) 906-0671, name the neighbourhood, and we will book it.
Grading. Clay till under most Oakville yards will not absorb it, so whatever the grade does, the water does. A lot that has settled toward the foundation, a patio laid flat or a neighbour's regrade can all send it the wrong way. We regrade, extend the downspouts and add a drain where the grade cannot do it alone. Read about yard drainage.
No. Oakville's grading guidance says downspouts and other pipes should not run to the property line or onto a neighbour's lot; they should let go onto a splash pad or a hard surface that sends water away from the house. Where the yard cannot carry it, a drain to a proper outlet is the fix. Read about yard drainage.
It should. Oakville's drainage guidance notes that posts set in the middle of a swale and boards run down to the ground both slow the water, and it suggests clearing the spoil from the post holes and keeping the boards at least an inch off the ground. We build that way so the swale keeps working. See fences and gates.
Yes. Designs are available on request: we help with the layout and the plant choices, and the plants are billed at cost. Our guide to the landscape design process in Oakville explains how we go from a first visit to a plan and a written quote.
No. One written price for the work, no travel charge for Oakville. Distance can affect scheduling, and we tell you that when we quote.
A 1-year craftsmanship warranty, the same as every job we do. It covers our workmanship for a full year after the job is finished, and we are fully insured on site. It is stated on your written quote too.
You hear it from us early. We try to give a heads-up on any delays and let you know when we are coming, with as much notice as possible. Oakville jobs often wait on approvals as well as the weather, so we keep you posted on both.
Two metres of solid fence in the rear and side yards. At the front, 1.5 metres, as long as anything above one metre is open lattice, and no more than 0.91 metres inside a visibility triangle. That is Oakville's by-law, and we build to it. See fences and gates.
No. Oakville's drainage guidance says retaining walls, tie-backs included, must stay on the owner's property and at least 0.3 metres, about a foot, from the property line to leave room for drainage, and grading along a shared line has to meet the existing grade there. Every wall also needs a drain behind it, which is how we build them. Read about retaining walls.
Only with a permit if its stems are 15 centimetres or more across, because Oakville's Private Tree Protection By-law 2017-038 counts hedges. Often we can keep the hedge and fit the patio in front of it. We tell you the options at the quote. Read about overgrown shrubs and hedges.
Usually, with Conservation Halton's permission for work near the valley edge and the Town's site alteration permit for the grade change. We check the map, write the approvals into the plan and build the time into the schedule, so the terrace is planned around what will be approved rather than changed later.
It can. The Town says a property on its heritage register may need heritage approval for a landscaping or deck project, and its heritage planners confirm what applies to your property. We find out before the plan is settled, so it suits what will be approved.
Yes. Oakville needs a driveway permit, issued as a Development Engineering Permit, to alter an existing driveway, add an entrance from a town road, create a circular drive or build curbs on the road allowance, and the driveway has to fit the zoning by-law. Trees on your lot, your neighbour's or the boulevard may need protecting during the work.
Any deck attached to the house, and a freestanding one that is both larger than 10 square metres and higher than 61 centimetres. If the lot backs onto green space, a river bed or a wetland and the work involves digging, the Town also asks for Conservation Halton's approval. See decks and fences.
It can. Oakville's Site Alteration By-law 2023-047 treats creating a hard surface, compacting soil or changing the grade as site alteration that needs a Development Engineering Permit, and the Town lists landscaping and retaining walls among the private projects that use one. We confirm at the quote whether yours does and build the permit time into the schedule.
It depends on the project. A grade change or fill needs a Development Engineering Permit under Site Alteration By-law 2023-047. Removing a tree 15 centimetres or more across needs a tree permit. A ravine or creek lot may need Conservation Halton's permission first. A taller retaining wall needs a building permit and an engineer. We sort out which apply before we quote.
