Custom pergolas, gazebos and sheds for Hamilton backyards
Lumen Landscaping builds pergolas, gazebos, pavilions and custom sheds in Hamilton, Burlington and the towns around them. Our carpenters build each one to fit your yard, we put the right base under it, and we finish the ground around it: the pad, the path, the beds. For a free written quote call (905) 906-0671 or send the form on this page. A shed or a pergola can often be quoted from a few photos and measurements by text or email; we come out when the yard needs a look.
These are the projects that turn a yard into a place you use. A pergola over the patio gives shade without closing in the sky. A gazebo or pavilion gives you a dry, bug-free room for dinner in August. A shed built for your yard, instead of a kit dropped on blocks, keeps the mower and the bikes out of the garage and looks like it belongs. What makes ours last is what you cannot see: footings below the frost line, a pad that will not heave, and framing that stays square.
What we build, and what goes under it
Each structure needs a different base, and the base sits on the quote next to the carpentry.
- Pergolas: Over a patio, a deck or a walkway, attached or freestanding, in pressure-treated or cedar lumber, on footings below the frost line or a deck frame built to take them.
- Gazebos and pavilions: Open or screened, roofed and sized to the table you want under it, on a flagstone or interlock floor or a concrete pad.
- Custom sheds: Built on site to the size and roofline that suits the yard, on a concrete pad poured heavier than a walkway: compacted gravel, wire mesh and a thick slab.
- Decks they tie into: Many pergolas and gazebos sit beside a custom deck, and we build both so the stairs and railings line up.
- The path and the planting: A flagstone or slab path from the door, steps where the grade drops, and beds planted around the structure.

Fitting it in
Sizing it to the yard, not the catalogue
The most common mistake with a backyard structure is buying the size that was on sale: a gazebo with no room to walk around the table, a shed so close to the fence the door cannot swing. We measure first: how you move through the yard, where the sun is at dinner time, which way the rain comes in.
Then we size the structure and the base together. A pergola over an existing patio goes on footings cut through the pavers, with the stones relaid around the posts. A gazebo usually wants a new interlock or flagstone pad a little bigger than its footprint. Decks, patios and the structures on them are quoted as one project, which is how a sloped backyard gets solved properly.
A pergola with a slatted side or a screened gazebo also does more for privacy than a tall fence in many yards; see no privacy in your backyard and our fences and gates page.
Why homeowners choose Lumen for backyard structures
Fully insured, 1-year craftsmanship warranty, Hamilton owned and operated. Quick to quote, quick to start, we answer every call. One crew builds the pad, the structure and the yard around it.
- Built on site for your yard: Not a kit on blocks. The size, the roofline and the posts land where they should, on footings or a pad that will not move.
- Materials at cost, no markup: Lumber, hardware, concrete and stone are billed at what they cost us, and the quote shows it.
- The ground is done too: Pad, path, steps and planting come from the same crew, so the structure looks settled the week it is finished.
- Over 40 five-star Google reviews: Homeowners around Hamilton rate our carpentry five stars, every review on Google.
Planning
Wood, finish, season and what sets the price
Wood and finish. Pressure-treated lumber is the workhorse for posts, beams and shed framing; cedar is the choice where you see and touch the wood. Either can be left to grey or stained, and we tell you how long new pressure-treated wood needs to dry before the first coat. Composite decking under a pergola gives you a floor you never stain.
The season. We build from early spring to late fall. A shed or a pergola is a good late-season project: the base goes in while the ground is still workable and the carpentry is finished on cool days.
Plans. For a bigger project, designs are available on request: a layout showing where the structure, the patio and the beds land, so you can move things on paper instead of in the yard.
What affects the price of a pergola, gazebo or shed
- The size and the roof: an open pergola, a shingled gazebo roof and a full shed with a door and windows are very different builds
- Pressure-treated or cedar, and whether it is stained
- The base: footings through an existing patio, a new stone pad, or a poured concrete pad
- Screens, railings, built-in benches, lighting and gates
- The path, steps and planting around it
- Access to the backyard for materials and concrete
The written quote is free, lists the base and the carpentry separately, and holds for the work it describes.

FAQs
Pergola, gazebo and shed questions
Yes, and it is one of our most common jobs. Over interlock we cut through the pavers, set footings below the frost line and relay the stones around the posts so it looks planned. Over a deck we check the framing first; posts can be bolted to a frame built to carry them or set on their own footings.
Attached pergolas sit tight to the wall, feel like part of the house and need one fewer row of posts, but they need a proper ledger and are more likely to need a building permit. Freestanding ones can go anywhere, over a fire pit or at the end of a path, and are easier to approve. We look at the wall and the patio and tell you which suits your house.
Yes. That is where a deck and a patio work best as one project: the deck comes off the house at door height, stairs step down to a patio cut into the slope, and a low wall holds the grade. Read how on our deck builders page and the sloped backyard page.
We build it on a concrete pad. A shed on blocks or patio stones racks out of square within a few winters as the ground heaves, and then the door sticks and the roof leaks at the corners. Our pads go on compacted gravel with wire mesh, thicker than a walkway, with the grade sloped away so the floor stays dry.
Big enough for the mower, the bikes and the patio furniture, or a workshop with a window and a bench. We build on site, so the size is set by your yard and the City's rules on lot coverage and setbacks, not by a kit. We measure the space and check how close to the fence it can go.
Pressure-treated lumber for posts, beams and framing, cedar where the wood is seen and touched. Both can be left to weather grey or stained, and we tell you how long new pressure-treated wood needs to dry before the first coat. For a floor you never stain, composite decking under a pergola is the answer.
A pergola over an existing patio is usually a few days once the footings have set. A gazebo with a new pad or stone floor, or a shed with a poured pad, takes longer because the base cures before the carpentry starts. Your written quote comes with a timeline and a start date.
Fall is a good time: the pad or the footings go in while the ground is still workable and the carpentry is done on cool days. Once the ground freezes, footings cannot be dug and a pad cannot be poured, so a late booking may be split, with the ground work before the freeze and the structure finished when the weather allows.
Yes, and we would rather you let us. A gazebo at the end of a muddy strip of grass never gets used; a flagstone path, a step where the grade drops and a bed of shrubs around the base make it part of the yard. The same crew does the pad, the path and the planting: one quote, one start date, one clean-up.
The size and the roof, the wood and whether it is stained, the base it needs, extras such as screens, benches, railings and lighting, the path and planting around it, and access to the backyard for materials and concrete. Each is a line on the written quote, which is free.
When it helps, yes. A pergola over an existing patio or a straightforward shed can often be quoted from photos and a few measurements sent by text or email. A gazebo with a new stone floor, a sloped yard or a project that ties into a deck gets a visit so we can check the grade and the access.
Sometimes. A deck attached to the house, or used with a pool, needs a building permit from the City of Hamilton; a small freestanding deck close to the ground may not. Sheds and gazebos depend on their size and where they sit on the lot, and an attached pergola is treated more like a deck. We check whether yours needs one before we quote, and a free Ontario One Call locate comes before any footing is dug.
