Concrete in Burlington
Concrete driveways, walkways and steps in Burlington
A concrete driveway or walkway in Burlington is built the way we build everywhere: the old surface dug out and disposed of, a compacted aggregate base, wire mesh or rebar, 32 MPa concrete at the stated depth, stress joints cut, the forms stripped and the edges backfilled. Burlington adds two things before the pour: altering an existing driveway needs a Driveway Modification Permit from the City, with the allowed width set by the width of your property, and a change to the grade of the lot falls under the site alteration by-law.
How we build and finish it is on our concrete page, and the city is on our Burlington page. Our guide to interlock versus concrete driveways for Burlington homes weighs the two. Materials come at what they cost us, each job carries a 1-year craftsmanship warranty, and we are fully insured. Call (905) 906-0671 or send the form for a free written quote.

What a good concrete quote in Burlington includes
The pour is invisible once it sets, so the quote has to say what went into it.
- Excavation and a compacted base: The old surface dug out and hauled away, then 4 inches of compacted aggregate under a walkway or steps and 5 inches under a shed or hot tub pad.
- Reinforcement, the mix and the depth: 10 gauge wire mesh in a walkway or pad, rebar in a porch, and 32 MPa concrete at 4 inches or more for a walkway, 5 inches for a pad, at least 4 inches throughout for a porch.
- Stress joints and the finish: Joints cut to control where the concrete cracks, and the finish named: brush, non slip brush on steps and porches, stamped or exposed aggregate.
- The driveway permit: For a driveway being widened or changed, the City's Driveway Modification Permit, the allowed width for your property, and who is arranging any curb or sidewalk change.
- The grade: A note that the slab sits at the existing grade and keeps the lot's drainage, or that the City's site alteration screening has been done.
- Edges and cleanup: Forms stripped, the concrete cleaned, and soil placed back along the form edges so there is no trench beside the new walkway.
- Steps, landings and extras: A raised step and landing, a bull nose on the step, parging, or a porch wall down to below grade, each with its own price.

By neighbourhood
Concrete work by Burlington neighbourhood
The recipe is the same from the lake to the escarpment. The lot and the access change.
- Aldershot: Older lots between the escarpment and the bay, with driveways from an earlier era ready to be replaced, and Conservation Halton's regulated area to check near Grindstone Creek.
- Tyandaga and Brant Hills: Sloping driveways and walkways on the escarpment side, where a step and a landing take up the grade and the slab sheds water downhill, not into the garage.
- Roseland and Shoreacres: Lakeside streets from the 1920s with stately homes, where front steps, porches and walkways have to look right beside an older house and the tree by-law reaches the big trees out front.
- Millcroft and The Orchard: Family homes north of the QEW where the usual asks are a shed pad, a hot tub pad or a wider driveway, which needs the City's permit.
- Alton Village: The newest neighbourhood, north of Dundas Street between Walkers Line and Appleby Line, where builder's walkways and narrow driveways are replaced or widened within the width the City allows.
- Headon Forest and Palmer: Streets built from the 1980s on, where the original walkway and steps are cracked or sunken and ready to be replaced on a proper base.

Local rules
Burlington rules that affect concrete work
Driveways. In Burlington a Driveway Modification Permit is required before altering an existing driveway. The allowed width depends on the width of your property, driveways must generally run perpendicular to the street, and any change to the curb or the sidewalk is arranged through the City. Work that adds hard surface also has to meet the zoning by-law and the tree by-laws. We check the width for your lot and handle the application.
Site alteration. Burlington’s Site Alteration By-law 64-2014 regulates placing or removing fill and changing grade or drainage, and the City’s screening checklist names sidewalk and patio construction. A slab at the existing grade is the usual case; a pad that needs the yard built up near a lot line is not, and we say so before we quote.
Locates. Before any dig, Ontario One Call marks the buried lines. The locate is free, we book it, and it takes about five business days.
Trees. Inside the urban boundary a tree 20 cm or more across is protected by Burlington’s private tree by-law, and driveway work must comply with it, so a new driveway beside a street tree is laid out around the roots.
The first winter. Keep de-icing salt off new concrete through its first winter. Sand gives grip, and snow cleared early never packs into ice.

FAQs
Burlington concrete questions
Both last on a proper base. Concrete is the simpler, lower-cost surface; interlock can be repaired one section at a time and comes in more looks. Our guide to interlock versus concrete driveways in Burlington goes through it.
4 inches of compacted aggregate under a walkway, 5 under a shed or hot tub pad, then 10 gauge wire mesh and 32 MPa concrete at 4 inches or more for the walkway and 5 for the pad, with stress joints cut.
Yes. We support the awning, dig out the old porch, lay a new gravel base and build a porch at least 4 inches thick with rebar and a non slip brush finish, then put the railings back on new hardware. When only the face is tired, we parge instead.
Keep de-icing salt off it for the first winter, use sand for grip, and clear snow promptly so it does not pack into ice. A sealer helps too.
Yes. The City requires a Driveway Modification Permit before an existing driveway is altered, and the width it allows depends on the width of your property. We handle the application as part of the job.
Not when it sits at the existing grade and leaves the lot's drainage as it is. The City's screening checklist decides, and it asks about grade changes near a lot line, so a pad that needs the yard built up can answer yes. We walk through it with you before the quote.
