    Lawn Mowing

Lawn mowing and grass cutting for Hamilton yards

Lumen Landscaping takes lawn mowing and grass cutting requests across Hamilton, Burlington and the towns around them: front and back lawns, boulevards, townhouse and condo common areas and small commercial lots. A proper cut includes string trimming along fences, beds and walls, edging along the driveway and walks, and blowing the clippings off every hard surface. For a fast reply call (905) 906-0671 or send the form on this page with your address and how often you want the lawn cut.

We also build and repair lawns: new sod, grading and leveling and drainage. If a lawn is too far gone for mowing to help, we tell you, and we quote the repair.

What a proper lawn cut includes

This is what a good mowing visit covers, and what to ask for in any lawn cutting quote.

    • The right height: Hamilton lawns are cut at about 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 inches) for most of the season, never taking more than a third of the blade at once, so the grass stays thick and shades out weeds.
    • String trimming: Along fences, walls, beds, trees and posts where the mower cannot reach, cut to match the rest of the lawn.
    • Edging: Clean edges along the driveway, walks and curb so the grass does not creep over the concrete and interlock.
    • Clippings: Mulched back into the lawn on a normal week, which feeds the soil, and bagged when the grass is long, wet or full of seed heads.
    • Blowing off: Driveways, walks, patios and the curb in front blown clean before the crew leaves.
    • Sharp blades: A sharp blade makes a clean cut that heals fast. A dull one shreds the tips, and the lawn looks brown a day later.
    • Spring and fall visits: A spring cleanup and first cut to start the season, then leaf removal and a lower final cut in late fall so the grass does not mat under the snow.

“I recently had Lumen remove the surface of our weed-infested lawn and replace it with fresh sod on the larger of two areas, and river rock on the smaller area. It was a pleasure dealing with Jeff at Lumen.”

    Timing

How often to mow in a Hamilton season

Hamilton lawns are cool season grasses, mostly Kentucky bluegrass, fescues and perennial rye, and they grow fastest in spring and fall. The first cut usually comes in mid to late April, once the lawn has greened up and the ground is firm enough not to rut. From May through June most lawns need cutting every week. Skip a week in June and the next cut takes off too much at once, which leaves the lawn looking scalped.

In July and August growth slows, and a dry spell turns the lawn dormant and straw coloured. Mowing every ten to fourteen days, a notch higher, keeps the grass from stressing. Growth picks up again in September. The season ends with a lower final cut in late October or early November, after the leaves are off, so the grass does not mat down and grow snow mould over the winter.

Mowing height matters as much as how often. Grass left at 6 to 8 cm shades the soil, holds moisture and crowds out weeds, which matters in Ontario, where cosmetic weed killers are banned on lawns. See keeping a lawn green all summer and spring lawn care in May.

Mowing as part of a healthy lawn

A cut is only as good as the lawn under it. Regular mowing keeps a healthy lawn looking sharp, but it does not fix thin grass, compacted Mountain clay or a yard that holds water. Those lawns need aeration, dethatching and overseeding, and the worst need new sod on proper topsoil. Our lawn care page lays out the whole season.

Bumps and ruts. A bumpy lawn scalps under the mower and never looks even. Rolling does not fix it; top dressing the low spots or regrading does. See uneven, bumpy yard.

What affects the price of lawn mowing

    • Lawn size, and how many separate areas there are front, back and side
    • How often it is cut: weekly, every other week or on call
    • Slopes, ditches and narrow gates that need a push mower or trimmer
    • Trimming around beds, trees, fences and play sets
    • Bagging and hauling clippings instead of mulching them
    • Spring cleanup, leaf removal and a fall cut added to the season

A season agreement keeps the lawn on a steady schedule, and it is the easiest way onto a busy crew’s route before the May rush.

    FAQs

    Lawn mowing questions

Weekly from May through June, when cool season grass grows fastest. Every ten to fourteen days in a hot, dry July and August, then weekly again in September as growth picks up. The rule all season is never to take more than a third of the blade off in one cut.

About 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 inches) for most of the season, a little higher in summer heat. Short lawns dry out, burn and fill with weeds and crabgrass. The last cut of the fall can go a bit lower, around 5 cm (2 inches), so the grass does not mat under the snow.

The first cut usually comes in mid to late April, once the lawn greens up and the soil is firm. The last cut is usually late October or early November, after most of the leaves are down and growth has stopped.

Left on, on a normal week. Short clippings break down fast and return nitrogen to the soil, and they do not cause thatch. Bag them when the grass is long, wet or full of seed heads, or when the clippings would sit in clumps.

Yes. Requests from townhouse and condo complexes, property managers and small commercial lots are welcome, with boulevards and common areas cut on the same schedule. For bigger sites see our commercial landscaping page.

It depends on the size of the lawn, how often it is cut, slopes and trimming, and whether clippings are bagged. A written quote lists the visits and what each one includes, so you can compare like with like.

Mowing high and often helps a lawn thicken, but it will not bring back a lawn that is compacted, starved or mostly weeds. That lawn needs aeration and overseeding, or new sod if it is past saving. Send a photo and we will tell you which.

Usually two to three weeks after it is laid, once the roots have knitted into the soil and a corner does not lift when you tug it. Cut it high the first few times and keep heavy mowers off soft ground. Our new sod care guide has the details.

Yes. Spring cleanup and fall leaf removal can be booked with the mowing season. Garden beds get cleanup, mulch and edging from our own crew.
