Walls fail from the bottom and from behind. A soft base lets them settle, and water trapped behind them pushes them over. We dig down to firm ground, build a compacted gravel base, set a level first course and backfill with clear stone so water drains away instead of building up behind the wall.
Our favourite projects are garden walls with the garden done too: a stone or block wall that lifts and frames the bed, new soil, plants and mulch, finished by one crew in one project. We also build taller retaining walls that turn a slope into usable yard, wood retaining walls, and steps set right into the wall.
