Front yard landscaping
Curb appeal that starts at the sidewalk
Lumen Landscaping builds and refreshes front yards across Hamilton, Burlington and the towns around them: front walkways and steps, porch repairs, garden beds and borders, edging and mulch, and new sod to finish it. For a free written quote call (905) 906-0671 or send the form on this page. Most front yards can be quoted from a few photos by text or email; we come out when the slope, the steps or the access need a look.
The front yard is the part of your property everyone sees, and it works hard. It carries you from the driveway to the door in every season, it sheds water away from the foundation, and it tells the street the house is looked after. Most front yards need three things done well: a safe, level way to the door, beds that look tidy all year, and a lawn that is green right to the edges.
We do the hard and the soft parts with the same crew, so the walkway, the bed edges and the sod meet in clean lines instead of three trades leaving three seams. And if only one part bothers you, we fix that part: a sunken walk re-levelled, one bed reset, a strip of new sod along the drive.

Front yards from our crew
What we do in a front yard
Every front yard quote lists each of these on its own line, so you can do the whole yard or just the part that bothers you most.
- Front walkways: Interlock, large slabs or flagstone from the driveway to the door, on a compacted gravel base sloped so water runs off toward the lawn, never toward the house.
- Steps and landings: Front steps rebuilt with slab or interlock treads on their own compacted base, every rise the same height, and a landing wide enough to open the storm door.
- Porches: A concrete porch that is flaking or stained but sound underneath can be resurfaced and parged instead of rebuilt. See concrete steps and porches.
- Garden beds and borders: New beds along the house and the walk, planted for the sun or shade you actually have, with a low stone border or a raised garden wall where the grade calls for one.
- Edging and mulch: A deep, crisp shovel edge, new landscape fabric and fresh mulch or river rock. Our garden bed cleanup, mulch and edging page covers the one-visit reset.
- New sod: The tired front lawn stripped out, the grade fixed, topsoil added where it is thin, and new sod laid last, tight to the walk and the bed edges.
- Trimming: Overgrown shrubs and hedges cut back to a tidy shape in the same visit. See tree and shrub trimming.

What our customers say
“The owner was professional, communicated well, and his crew especially Ari did a great job. I really enjoyed the experience of choosing each plant with the owner's help and now our yard feels like a true oasis.”
“Great experience with Lumen Landscaping. They completely transformed my front yard with a great mix of trees, hydrangeas, and flowers. They brought the yard back to life and did a really clean, professional job.”
“Great job having small grass lawn replaced with wood chips. Didnt know we could get a machine through the small gate - the top layer, weed barrier cloth and thick layer of chips. They cleaned up after and were done in a day.”
Walkways and steps
Walkways and steps: the part you use every day
A front walk carries you, your groceries and your visitors to the door in every season, so it has to stay level, shed water and stay safe in January. We build walks in interlock, large slabs or flagstone on a compacted gravel base, with a slight fall so rain runs off to the lawn instead of pooling at the step or running back toward the foundation.
Steps get their own compacted base and an even rise, because the one step that is a little taller than the rest is the one people trip on. A landing at the door should be big enough to stand on with the storm door open, and we match paver and slab colours to your brick and trim.
Already have a walk that has sunk in places? It can often be lifted, re-based and relaid with the same pavers through patio restoration. If roots are lifting it or it ices over every winter, read tree roots lifting the walkway and ice on the walkway every winter.

Planning
Planning a front yard that lasts
Start at the door. Walk from the driveway to the door and back. Where you actually step is where the walk should go, wide enough for two people side by side, with no sharp turn at the bottom of the steps. A straight walk suits a formal house; a gentle curve suits a wide lot.
Keep water moving away from the house. The walk, the beds and the lawn should all fall away from the foundation. If water already runs back toward the house or pools by the steps, we fix the grade first; see water draining toward the house.
Beds for the light you have. A north-facing front or a bed under a big maple wants shade plants such as hostas, ferns and boxwood; a south-facing bed takes sun lovers and ornamental grasses. We bring plant options that suit the soil and the light, and every plant is billed at cost.
Make it easy to keep. A deep shovel edge, new fabric and mulch at an even depth keep beds tidy with a light top-up each spring. River rock suits the strip along the house where nothing grows. Fewer, larger shrubs need less trimming than many small ones.
One part at a time is fine. Many front yards are done in stages: the walk and steps first, the beds and sod after. We plan it so the first stage leaves clean edges for the next.
What affects the price of a front yard
- The length of the walk and the number of steps, and the material you pick
- How much old concrete, pavers, sod and soil has to come out
- The size of the beds, the plants and the yards of mulch or rock
- The square footage of new sod and how much topsoil the ground needs
- Access for the machine and the deliveries
The written quote is free and holds for the work it describes.

FAQs
Front yard landscaping questions
Usually the walk and the beds. A level walk with a clean border and crisp bed edges changes how the whole house looks from the street, and fresh mulch and a few well-placed shrubs finish it. If the lawn is thin, new sod is the last step and the one people notice first.
Just the walkway is fine. We tie the new walk into the driveway, the steps and the lawn so it looks like it was always there, and we patch the sod and the bed edges we disturb. If the walk you have is sound but sunken in spots, re-levelling it may be all it needs.
All three last when the base is right. Interlock comes in the most colours and patterns and can be lifted and relaid later. Large slabs give a clean, modern look with fewer joints. Concrete is one seamless surface and can be stamped. We offer all three and will tell you which suits the house.
Yes. Interlock or slab steps that have tipped are taken apart, the base is rebuilt and compacted, and the treads are reset level with the same rise on every step. Concrete steps that are flaking can often be resurfaced. Read rebuilding interlock front steps.
Often, yes. A porch that is sound underneath but worn, flaking or stained on top can be ground, resurfaced and parged. A porch that is cracked through, sinking or pulling away from the house is better rebuilt, and we will tell you plainly which one you have.
It depends on the light. Shade under a big maple suits hostas, ferns, astilbe and boxwood; full sun suits ornamental grasses, spirea, hydrangeas and drought-tolerant perennials. We match plants to your soil and sun, place them where they have room to grow, and bill every plant at cost.
With a deep, crisp shovel edge cut around the bed, so the lawn and the garden read as two clean shapes, and new landscape fabric under the mulch. On a long straight run a machine edge gives the same clean line. Either one is quick to re-cut when the grass creeps back.
Mulch for planted beds: it feeds the soil, keeps roots cool and makes it easy to add plants later. River rock for the strip along the house, a side yard or a bed with little in it: it never needs topping up, but it holds heat and is harder to change your mind about. Both go over new fabric.
Yes. We strip the old turf, fix the grade so water runs away from the house, add topsoil where the ground is thin and lay new sod tight to the walk, the driveway and the bed edges. The front lawn and the boulevard strip are usually done together, so the green runs all the way to the curb.
A bed reset or a strip of sod is often a day. A new walk with steps, beds and sod is usually a few days on site. Your written quote gives the dates, and we try to give a heads-up on any delays and let you know when we are coming, with as much notice as possible.
Yes. Fewer, larger shrubs, a deep edge, good fabric and mulch at an even depth, river rock where nothing grows and a lawn laid on real topsoil keep the work to a light spring top-up and an occasional trim. We plan for how much time you want to spend out there.
When the job needs it. A lot of front yards can be quoted by phone, by text or by email from a few photos and rough measurements. Steps, a slope or a drainage question usually get a visit so we can check the grade. Either way the quote is written and free.
The length of the walk and the number of steps, the material, how much old concrete, pavers and sod has to come out, the size of the beds and the plants, the square footage of new sod and the topsoil it needs, and access. Each is a line on your written quote, and materials are billed at cost with no markup.
Walkways, garden beds and new sod are landscaping, which does not need a building permit in Hamilton; a site alteration permit can apply if the grade changes a lot. Widening the driveway is different: where it crosses the boulevard, the City has to approve the driveway access first. We check what your project needs when we quote, and buried lines are located through Ontario Dig Authority before we dig.
