    Fences in Burlington

Fence installation in Burlington, to Burlington's heights

Burlington's fence rules are its own, and they are not Hamilton's. The City's zoning by-law handout allows a fence up to 2.0 m on a residential lot, 1.2 m in the front yard near the street line, and only 1 m for solid fencing inside a visibility triangle at a corner or a driveway. Get the front yard height wrong and the fence comes down a foot. That is the first thing we check.

What we build is on our fences and gates page: privacy fences, horizontal cedar, gates that stay square, and failed sections of an older fence rebuilt. The city is on our Burlington page. Lumber is billed at what it costs us, the work carries a 1-year craftsmanship warranty, and we are fully insured. Call (905) 906-0671 for a free written quote.

What a good fence quote in Burlington includes

A fence quote should let you picture the fence, know it is legal, and show the neighbour what they are being asked to share.

    • The heights, checked against Burlington: 2.0 m in the rear and side yards, 1.2 m in the front yard near the street line, 1 m for solid fencing in a visibility triangle, each stated for your lot.
    • The line: On your side of the lot line, or on the line by agreement with the neighbour. A fence on the line is a line fence under Ontario's Line Fences Act.
    • Posts and footings: Post size, spacing, and how deep they are set, below the frost line so the fence does not lift. Heaved and rotted posts are why fences lean.
    • The lumber, named, and the gates: Pressure treated or cedar, the board style, the cap and the trim, with lumber billed at cost; and the gates, how wide, which way they swing, and a brace so they never sag.
    • Trees: Whether a post lands near a tree 20 cm or more across, because the private tree by-law protects it and its roots.
    • The old fence out, and the locate: Taking down and disposing of the old fence as its own line, and a free Ontario One Call locate before any post hole.
    • A warranty in writing: Ours is a 1-year craftsmanship warranty, and we are fully insured.

    By neighbourhood

    Fences by Burlington neighbourhood

The heights are the same across the city. The lots, the trees and the neighbours are not.

    • Aldershot: Older lots with mature trees along the fence line, where posts are planned around roots the City protects, and a ravine at the back can bring Conservation Halton into it.
    • Tyandaga and Brant Hills: Sloping lots on the escarpment side, where the fence steps down the grade in panels and the posts on the low side are set deeper.
    • Roseland and Shoreacres: Lakeside streets from the 1920s with stately homes and big trees, where a 1.2 m front fence and a 2.0 m privacy fence behind have to look right beside an older house.
    • Millcroft and The Orchard: Family neighbourhoods north of the QEW where the original builder's fence is twenty-odd years old and the posts are going: a rebuilt section or a new fence, and we tell you which.
    • Alton Village: The newest subdivision, north of Dundas Street between Walkers Line and Appleby Line, where the fence line is bare and three neighbours are deciding at once. We quote the whole run or each share.
    • Headon Forest and Palmer: Established streets from the 1980s on, between Upper Middle Road and the QEW, with pool fences and privacy fences along busy roads.

    Local rules

Burlington rules that affect a fence

Height. Burlington’s zoning by-law handout sets the limits on a residential lot: 2.0 m at most, 1.2 m in the front yard near the street line, and 1 m for solid fencing inside a visibility triangle, so drivers can see. We check your lot against all three before we quote.

Shared fences. A fence on the boundary is a line fence under Ontario’s Line Fences Act. When the two owners cannot agree on building or repairing one, either can ask the municipal clerk for fence viewers, appointed by the city, who decide how the work and the cost are split and what the fence will be, not where the boundary is. Most never get that far, and we price both shares so the split is plain.

Trees. Inside Burlington’s urban boundary a permit is needed to injure or remove a tree 20 cm or more in diameter, measured at 1.37 m from the ground, and work that damages roots counts. A post hole beside a protected tree is moved or dug by hand.

Locates. A post hole is a dig, so Ontario One Call marks the buried lines before the auger goes in: no charge, booked by us, about five business days.

Pools. A fence that encloses a pool has to meet Burlington’s pool enclosure rules as well as the fence heights, and we check both.

    FAQs

    Burlington fence questions

Up to 2.0 m on a residential lot, 1.2 m in the front yard near the street line, and 1 m for solid fencing inside a visibility triangle, under the City's zoning by-law handout. These are Burlington's numbers, not Hamilton's, and we check your lot against them.

Whatever you agree, and most neighbours split it. If you cannot agree, Ontario's Line Fences Act lets either owner ask the municipal clerk for fence viewers to decide the split and the fence. We price the fence whole or by share.

We can quote each house or a run of them, and it is cheaper per foot when neighbours go together. Each owner gets a written quote for their share.

Yes. Any digging in Ontario needs an Ontario One Call locate first so the buried lines are marked. There is no charge, we book it, and it takes about five business days.

Usually, by moving the posts off the root zone or digging those holes by hand. Burlington's private tree by-law protects trees 20 cm or more across, and damaging roots counts as injuring the tree, so we plan around it.

Yes. When the boards and rails are sound we take out the rotted or heaved posts, set new ones below the frost line and rehang the panels. If the boards are going too, we quote the rebuild. More on leaning fences and rotted posts.
