Interlock
Interlock driveway installation in Hamilton, built from the base up
A driveway carries cars, a snow blower and a winter of road salt, so it is built very differently from a patio. Lumen Landscaping builds interlock driveways across Hamilton, Burlington and the towns around them: we dig out deeper, build a thick gravel base in compacted layers, set vehicle rated pavers with a steady slope away from the house, lock every edge and finish the joints with polymeric sand. For a free written quote call (905) 906-0671 or send the form on this page. Every driveway gets a visit before we quote, so we can check the soil, the slope and where the water goes.
Already have an interlock driveway that has sunk, shifted or filled with weeds? Many can be lifted, re-levelled and relaid instead of replaced. See our interlock repair page.
What an interlock driveway from us includes
Every driveway starts with a free written quote that lists the dig, the base, the pavers, the edges and the finish, so you know exactly what is included before we start.
- Excavation and base for vehicle loads: We take out the old asphalt, concrete or pavers, dig down to firm soil and build a gravel base in thin compacted layers, far deeper than a patio base.
- Edge restraint: Every open edge is locked with a restraint set into the base, so the pavers cannot creep outward under turning tires.
- Drainage and slope: The surface is graded to shed water away from the house and the garage door, toward the street or the lawn, not into your basement or onto the neighbour.
- Apron and curb: The end of the driveway is built on the same deep base and set to meet the curb or road edge cleanly, so it does not dip where cars turn in.
- Permeable option: Permeable pavers with open joints and a clear stone base let rain soak into the ground instead of running off, where the soil allows it.
- Sealing and polymeric sand: Polymeric sand goes in twice to lock the joints and keep weeds and ants out, and sealing is available to deepen the colour and resist oil and salt stains.

How we build an interlock driveway that stays flat
1. Locate and dig. A free Ontario One Call locate comes before any digging. We remove the old surface, haul it away and dig down to firm soil, deeper than for any patio, because the base has to carry a car without rutting.
2. Build the base in lifts. Crushed gravel goes down in thin layers and each one is compacted before the next. A base dumped in one lift and tamped once keeps settling for years, and that is what leaves dips in the tire tracks.
3. Set the slope. The base is graded so water runs away from the house and the garage door and toward the street or the lawn. If the driveway slopes down to the garage, we point that out at the visit and talk through how to handle the water.
4. Lay vehicle rated pavers. Driveway pavers are thicker than patio pavers, and we lay them in a pattern that locks together under turning tires, most often herringbone.
5. Lock the edges and finish the joints. Edge restraint goes on every open side, the surface is compacted again, and polymeric sand is swept in twice. The street and the neighbour's side are swept clean before we leave.

Planning
Pavers, patterns and borders for a driveway
Thicker pavers. Driveway pavers are made thicker than patio pavers so they can carry a car without cracking or rocking. We show you the vehicle rated options from the brands we install.
A pattern that locks. Herringbone is the strongest pattern for a driveway because each paver locks against its neighbours in every direction, so the surface resists turning tires. A contrasting border or a soldier course along the edges frames the driveway and ties it to the walkway.
Colour that suits your home. We help you match the pavers to your brick, trim and roof, and a layout drawing is available on request.

Interlock driveway questions
Deeper than for a patio. A driveway has to carry the weight of a car, so we dig down to firm soil and build a thicker gravel base, laid in thin layers and compacted after each one, with a bedding layer on top that the pavers are set on. The exact depth depends on your soil. Hamilton has a lot of clay, which holds water and needs a deeper base, so we check it at the visit and write the depth into your quote.
Edge restraint. Every open edge of the driveway gets a restraint set into the base below the pavers, so the field cannot creep outward under tires. Missing or weak edges are one of the most common reasons an older driveway spreads, opens up at the joints and sinks along the sides.
We build a steady slope into the base across the whole driveway, so water runs away from the house and the garage door and toward the street or the lawn. Getting the grade right underneath is what keeps puddles, ice patches and wet basements away, and it is checked again before the pavers go down.
Yes. The apron takes the hardest hits from turning tires, snow plows and salt, so we build it on the same deep base as the rest of the driveway, set it to meet the curb or road edge cleanly and lock its edges so it does not dip or crack where cars turn in. The section near the street usually sits on the City boulevard, so if you are planning a wider driveway, check the City of Hamilton rules first.
Yes, where the site suits it. A permeable driveway uses pavers with wider joints filled with small clear stone, set on an open stone base that holds rainwater and lets it soak into the ground instead of running off into the street. It works well where runoff is a problem, but heavy clay can limit how fast water drains away, so we check the soil before we recommend it.
Polymeric sand is joint sand mixed with a binder that hardens once it is misted with water. It locks the pavers together and helps keep weeds and ants out of the joints, and on a driveway we sweep it in twice. Sealing is optional, and we recommend it for driveways: it deepens the colour and helps resist oil, salt and stains. Ask us to add it to your quote, and we can come back to re-seal every few years.
Usually, yes. Interlock can be lifted, the base corrected and compacted, and the same pavers relaid one section at a time, so the repair blends in with the rest of the driveway. See our interlock repair page and our guide to why an interlock driveway goes uneven.
Both last a long time when the base is right. Interlock gives you more colours and patterns and can be repaired one section at a time; concrete is one smooth slab that is quick to clear of snow but harder to patch invisibly once it cracks. Our guide to interlock vs concrete vs stamped concrete compares them side by side, and our concrete driveways page covers the concrete option.
Most driveways take a few days, depending on the size, the old surface coming out and the weather. Once the pavers are compacted and the polymeric sand has had time to set, usually a day or two without rain, you can drive and park on it.
